IRC migration from Freenode to QuakeNet

Post by LDAsh »

About a week ago, something weird happened with Freenode. I was not connecting properly, I was not able to log in, identify or operate the channel. Well, after a bunch of asking around and looking into the situation, I still _barely_ understand what has happened, and I'm not sure many people really do or the true motives behind it, but all I can say is - it's a mess!

There are a lot of conspiracy theories flying around and some really (what I can call) stinky stuff, on both sides of the "argument". After some thinking about everything and listening to both sides, I decided that it doesn't even really matter - a mess is a mess and the mere inconvenience alone caused by this massive upheaval is enough to force me to migrate to a network that, by and large, should be free of both (insane)politics and possible commercialisation of what is undoubtedly the biggest IRC network in the world, ever? I'm not saying that's the case, I'm just saying that's the allegation...

So, quite simply, #violae will no longer be officially located on Freenode.net. I've decided to go with QuakeNet.org mainly because we still have and probably always will have that core relation, the fundamental genetics, to the Quake (and Doom) games deep in the workflow. Radiant is our mapping software of choice, everything kind of orbits around that and the patchDef3s in the idTech4 map format is central to our robust LOD techniques.

I realise this will suck for anyone wanting to seriously participate in the chat, especially if not already on the network. The whole reason for going with Freenode in the first place was that it was the most popular and 'reliable' one that most IRC users would probably already be registered with. Depends on how seriously you want to take it, I guess. Head to the website to learn more about setting up, but, like all other IRC chat, just remember - anyone can still jump in anytime:-
